He graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Letters from the Colegio Americano de Guatemala. At the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala he obtained a Teaching Staff of Secondary Education specialized in Natural Sciences, the Baccalauretus un Scientiis and a Bachelor of Education. Later he studied Educational Administration and Curriculum Development at Michigan State University; at Stanford University, California, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Policy Analysis and a Postgraduate Degree as an Evaluation Specialist.
As a teacher, he has served in the Secondary Section of the Colegio Americano and the Faculty of Education of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. At UNESCO, he worked as a Regional Specialist for Central America and Panama. At the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales ASIES, he held the position of Deputy Executive Secretary. In the government sector, he held the position of Minister and Vice Minister of Education of Guatemala. Since January 2000, he was Executive Secretary of the Fundación de la Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, until June 19, 2001. From June 2001 to date, he is the Rector of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala.
